Final Project

[Larisa Borshman]

Congratulations on graduating with your bachelor’s degree from Southern New Hampshire

University! A new array of opportunities is open to you, but which will you choose, and how will

it impact your life? Select your discipline area of interest and examine the set of jobs you have

applied to and received offer letters for to determine which one best fits your needs and wants.

Employment Opportunity Analysis

In this section of your milestone, you will focus on the opportunities presented in the discipline

area of interest to you. Compare the opportunity as instructed below:

Outline the characteristics that are most important to you in a job search, and explain why.

As the workforce continues to change, more employees are emphasizing work-life

balance as an important aspect of a healthy work environment. The important characteristics

for me when searching for a new job are:

Stability and Security

I am not big on big changes. Changing job frequently is not something I would enjoy.

When looking for a new job, I am looking to achieve a long-term career goal, position myself

better financially, and learn new skills.

Growth Opportunity

, I currently work for an employer that does not offer growth opportunity. Having to

work for my company I realized how important this factor is if I do not want to end up in a

dead-end job again. I have 12 years of office experience, I am attaining a bachelor’s in

business, and I am a quick learner. By gaining new knowledge and skill sets, I would want the

opportunity to apply for promotions and an increase in salary.

Flexibility

Flexibility is not a deal breaker as many do work 40+ hours in the office. However, I

value such an advantage. I want to be able to strike work/life balance and not be restricted to

weekends only when it comes to personal needs.

Benefits

It seems as for most companies medical and dental are available. I noticed not all

companies offer 401K and the once that do, do not always match the contribution 100%. As I

am an older woman, 401K is essential. I do not understand investments; therefore, I prefer that

the company offers 401K and matches some contributions with the free management of the

account.

Location

I have great work ethics; it is something I want to preserve. I live in NYC, and the

public transportation here is horrendous. I accepted a part-time job over the summer that is

only about 17 miles away and should only take me one hour of community. Taking what was

supposed to be one train turned into 2-3 trains at times to no training running at all. I felt

anxiety coming on as I had no way to get to work but to spend $45 on a cab or be fired.

Getting fired is not in my vocabulary, so I spend the money. Driving is also not an option as the

parking in the area is also horrible with 1-hour meters, and that’s if I find parking. After a few

, weeks and a few cabs, I decided to quit. Location is important to me. I must be able to have

access to work in more than one way whether it be a car, cab, bus or train.

Location: Compare the jobs in terms of distance and commute and consider the impact each

would have on your day-to-day life. Consider if you would be willing to commute or relocate

for any of these positions. Be sure to explain the considerations and show your calculations.

Assistant Teacher – Chelmsford, IA (town does not exist, I chose Des Moines, IA).

- Miles: 1,115 about 18 hours’ drive (travelmath.com)
- Cost of drive: $127.85 (travelmath.com)
- Fuel Cost: $301.97 (carinsurancedata.org)
- Cost of move: estimates between $4,048- $5,167 (moving.com)
- Salary: $25,000

This offer would be unreasonable for me to accept. I am not familiar with Iowa and would

relocate without being 100% sure that this is where I would want to live for the next 5 years.

Assistant Curator – Boston, MA

- Miles: 225 about 4 hours’ drive (travelmath.com)
- Cost of drive: $26.53 (travelmath.com)
- Fuel cost: $60.93 (carinsurancedata.org)
- Cost of Train: ranges between $49-$89 (5 hours travel time) (amtrak.com)
- Cost of Bus: $21 - $57 (5 hours travel time) (
- Cost of move: estimates between $$2,916 - $3,694 (moving.com)
- Salary: $32,000

This offer is more reasonable and is more acceptable. I am familiar with the area, and it is not

far from NYC, if I chose to relocate, I could visit friends and family on weekends. Boston

apartment prices are similar to NYC prices; I would have to find a close by the town to live.
