Advertisement of Junk Food Directed Towards Children
SOC 213
Southern New Hampshire University
The contemporary social problem that I have selected it the advertisement of junk food
directed towards children. The relevance of advertisement of junk food directed towards children
in today’s society on a local scale is because these advertisements are becoming more relevant in
pop up adds, billboards, commercials, etc. These are ways that the advertisement of junk food
directed towards children is presenting itself in the United States and my local community. It
seems as if every corner I turn, every commercial that comes on the television, and every ad that
pops up on my phone is an advertisement for junk food.
The social variables and determinants influencing the development of advertisement of
junk food directed towards children on a local level are parents, family, and the child’s
environment. Parents are a social variable influencing the development of the advertisement of
junk food directed towards children because the parents are the ones that may buy the children
the junk food, they may use the business as a place for rewarding the child, not teaching the child
or children about healthy eating, and themselves promoting the junk food to their children.
Family is a social variable influencing the development of the advertisement of junk food
directed towards children for some of the same reasons as the parents. As well as, holding a
child’s birthday at a business that promotes junk food, and using the business promoting junk
food to “spoil” the children. For example, a grandmother that only sees her grandchildren once a
month or every week may start and continue the habit of going through the McDonald’s drive
thru with the children and getting them a meal and an ice cream cone. The child’s environment is
a social determinant influencing the development of junk food directed towards children because
, a child that lives within a city would have more access to a business that sells junk food rather
than a child that lives out in the country. The child that lives out in the country would not have as
easy access to a business that sells junk food. These social variables and determinants greatly
influence the development of the advertisement of junk food directed towards children on a local
level.
The social variables and determinants influencing the development of advertisement of
junk food towards children on a global level are catchy commercials, pop up advertisements, and
games/downloadable applications. Catchy commercials are a social variable influencing the
development of advertisements of junk food directed towards children because the can promote a
play place located within the business for the children and showing children the toys that they
may get with the meals. I want to make a point that I know some commercials are identical, but
there are some that are targeted for specific areas such as suburb areas, rural areas, etc. Pop up
advertisements can be anywhere at any time. Whether you are playing a game on an electrical
device, watching television, or reading on an electrical device. These advertisements are tended
to grab your attention and persuade you to by the product that they are promoting. Some of these
advertisements are flashy, bright colors, loud audio, etc. all to grasp your attention quickly and
hold it. Then they describe this junk food in a manner that will make your mouth water, making
you crave this product. The reason that this social variable influences the development of junk
food towards children at a global level is because most companies tend to product advertisements
in bulk, only having to change the language. Americans may get the same pop up advertisement
as someone in Japan, only ours would be in English and theirs would be in Japanese.
Games/downloadable applications are a social variable influencing the development of
advertisements of junk food directed towards children because they tend to be games that
children would play, the rewards in these applications only promote more business for the
