While going through the module the topic that interested me the most was prenatal
development. Being a mom myself to three beautiful children, I have gone through rough times
with each and with my pregnancies and prenatal development. Though I do know the standard
nutritional facts and healthy facts about pregnancies, I still had a rough time understanding the
unknowns about pregnancy. When I found out I was pregnant, I made sure that health was my
priority for my baby. It is very important from the beginning to end (with the occasional
cravings of course, we are human) to get the best vitamins and nutrition into our bodies as we
can. According to the Encyclopedia of Children’s Health, Prenatal development refers to the
process in which a baby develops from a single cell after conception into an embryo and later a
fetus. Trying to understand the way a baby grows interests me and how the body affects the
baby and what you do affects the baby. My pregnancies were not what I would have expected
and that is what strikes my interest in this topic.
My son two years ago today actually, he was born on the 17th of January and he was
born with a condition called Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. So, throughout my pregnancy
before I knew he had the condition I was a top-notch pregnant woman, eating all the right
things and doing all the stuff by the book. And when we got the news that our son had a
condition and he wasn’t forming right in the womb, I didn’t know what I had done wrong. The
doctors assured me that it wasn’t anything I had done, and it was just an extra chromosome he
had developed. Doing more research and going through that it was awful and made me more
interested into researching more into what pregnant woman are taking or doing that they think
are doing the right thing but may be causing harm. Sadly, my son passed away ten days later
after birth and still a heavy weight on my heart.
