Measuring Goals
OL-501-X3076 Business Foundations
“American Apparel is a vertical integrated manufacturer, distributor and retailer of branded
fashion” (Metha, 2016). American Apparel was built on a mission to make great quality
clothing while avoiding the use of cheap labor. American Apparel has faced significant
challenges throughout the past couple of years. The company has been losing money and
incurring debt at a alarming rate. American Apparel went from a company that was a top trend
setter in 2008 to a company that was buried in debt and hasn’t turned a profit since 2009.
American Apparel has been at the front of two separate scandals, one with their previous CEO
and the other with their labor force. Both these scandals really hurt the company and they are
looking to get back on their feet. By setting SMART goals the company can make strides
towards returning to being one of Americas top companies and rebuilding their brand.
Based on the TOWS analysis of American Apparel, two SMART goals I would recommend
would be to improve sales and works towards becoming profitable. I think both of these
goals would give American Apparel a little bit of financial freedom and put them in a
position to rebrand and achieve back some of its early successes.
The first SMART goal would be to achieve sales of $800,000 within the next two years. Their
sales were in a steady decrease from 2008- 2010. However, in 2011, 2012 and 2013 their sales
have started to turnaround. Since there sales have been slowly increasing for the past 3 years
it’s not out of reach to achieve a sales goal of $800,000 within the next 2 years. Having a
target goal of $800,000 will help the organization focus on a specific goal and help motivate
the efforts by providing an aligned mission. This goal will be measured by daily, weekly and
monthly sales
