Critical Analysis Essay on “Me Talk Pretty One Day” by David Sedaris
English Composition I ENG-122
“Me Talk Pretty One Day” tells an engaging story about learning in an uncomfortable
situation; while it may seem to be nothing more than a story, there is much that someone could
learn from it. David Sedaris is studying French at an academy in Paris and feels intimidated by
his peers and teacher. The teacher is a constant source of belittlement and ridicule, using them
whenever anyone makes a mistake. The author works hard, spending numerous hours on
homework every night, and still receives insults from his teacher, some of which he does not
understand. After thinking he has not made any progress, Sedaris finds that he can, unlike before,
understand the entirety of his teacher’s verbal onslaught (86). The article’s claim of
uncomfortable situations being a part of growing to become better is compelling because the
author provides relatable examples of being uncomfortable, continues to work hard despite being

forty-one and reminds himself that he is a fully grown man. The author does this because he feels
intimidated by his peers’ skills and, despite being a fully developed adult, is feeling more anxious
than ever before. This statement explains that advancement in age does not equate to a decrease
of discomfort but an increase. Sedaris goes on to say, “I am now twice as frightened as I was
when, at the age of twenty, I allowed a failed nursing student to inject me with a horse
tranquilizer” (86). He shows that his fears had only increased with age, saying he is eight times
more anxious than on the first day of kindergarten when he was forcibly removed from his
