Colitis is a chronic digestive disease characterized by inflammation of the
inner lining of the colon. There are different types of colitis, and treatment
varies depending on what type you have, but they are all treated with some form
of anti-infectives which is a general term that encompasses anti-bacterials,
antibiotics, antifungals, anti-protozoans and antivirals. Vancomycin is used to
treat colitis inflammation of the intestine caused by certain bacteria) that may
occur after antibiotic treatment. Vancomycin is in a class of medications called
glycopeptide antibiotics. The use of the treatment is to stop the reproducing of
bacteria by destroying the bacteria walls, in thus weakening bacteria in the
intestines. Vancomycin will not kill bacteria or treat infections in any other part
of the body when taken by mouth. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel
disease (IBD) that causes inflammation and ulcers or sores in your digestive
tract. Ulcerative colitis affects the innermost lining of your large intestine /colon
and rectum. Symptoms usually develop over time, rather than suddenly.
