(B) Community Health Nursing Diagnosis
Increased risk of mental effects of isolation among the young adult population, related to
COVID 19, as evidenced by the school and social activity lockdown.
(B1) Health Inequity/Disparity
This Covid-19 pandemic has affected many people physically and mentally, but I believe
that the young adult population has been affected mentally and has been a vast battle more than
ever this year. Young adults may face challenges during this time with having to choose whether
they should avoid hanging out with loved ones such as friends, co-workers, and even family.
Most young adults have had to miss important events in their lives, such as graduations and
experiences of their first year in college, where they gain their independence because school got
closed down for a year. Metally missing out on these important even can make them miserable
or depressed. According to CDC, young adults ages 18-29 have reported having symptoms of
anxiety and depression have risen from 3.8% to 7.4% since the pandemic has started (CDC
National Center for Health Statistics). With my community being a college town, the majority of
our population is within this age group. I believe that the many facilities that we have may fill up
if not taken seriously.
, (B1a) Primary community and Prevention Resources
With the increase of anxiety and depression, my community has come up with a five-year
plan. During my windshield survey, I found plenty of health departments nearby, at least one in
each town. Per the Community Health Improvement Plan, the number one point of importance
stated is to have more access to all types of healthcare. If everyone had knowledge and access,
that would help relieve hospitals to get people where they need to go directly (Florida
Department of Health, 2021).
(B1b) Underlying Causes
According to the CDC, young adults claim that because they miss out on important
events such as a college experience, living on their own, graduation, and prom, the depression
has been more prominent. They feel there is no closure to the next step in life (National Center
for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, 2020). There has also been a struggle in obtaining a
job and starting their career. It had made them feel lost, affecting a person’s mental capacity if a
plan has been in place. During this Age, there is an expected experience that is needed in life.
This group started drinking more alcohol, and more antidepressants are being prescribed to cope.
Young adults feel as if the beginning of their lives has been taken away from them, resulting in
suicide or hurting others.
(B2) Evidence-Based Practice
According to a Cambridge University journal, the lockdown that took place by the
pandemic made anxiety and depression worst. Evidence shows that people became depressed
and angry. Not knowing what is going on and not knowing what to believe. Also, the stress of the
economy made people worse and did not know how to cope. Many of the young adults turned to
alcohol and recreational drugs. (Shanahan et al., 2020)
