Watching this TED Talk episode was an eye-opener. The country's current political
situation is an overwhelming problem that made me feel like I had to pick a side. Before what
did not occur to me was that these were never purely black and white matters—morality and
politics never were. This TED Talk by Jonathan Haidt made me realize that not one side is
entirely correct. To see the bigger picture, you should not stubbornly anchor yourself to the
ground and refuse to budge. It is essential to step back and open your eyes to gain a broader
perspective.
Is America more divided than ever before? Sadly, I agree. I was in awe of how Haidt
eloquently pointed out that we now are all disgusted with those who do not have the same beliefs
as us. Disgust is indeed a strong word—a country with half of its citizens disgusted with the
other rivaling half will inevitably have difficulty mending its wounds.
This subject matter is too complex to pinpoint and explain all the underlying causes in one
reaction paper. However, the TED Talk sharply pointed out two major contributing forces to the
political polarization of America. These are the passing of the Greatest Generation and the dawn
of the age of social media. These two forces are brought about by the death of time and our
society's evolution.
The first variable I would like to tackle is the loss of the Greatest Generation. These men
and women experienced World War II and realized the importance of cooperation and
compromise at such a young age. These values were deeply ingrained into their mindset—and
