nurses were needed to care for those wounded in battle. One of those nurses was Florence
Nightingale, who is considered the founder of modern nursing. More than 150 years later, many
of the health promoting principles expounded by Ms. Nightingale continue to drive the nursing
profession. Nursing is a profession based on caring for others by providing empathy,
maintaining confidentiality, and helping others return to a state of health as quickly as possible.
Nurses, in general, are people who tend to be nurturing and altruistic, often giving of themselves
to others to the detriment of their own health. The American population is aging at a rapid rate
as baby boomers become “geri-boomers;” additionally, there is a chronic shortage of nursing
staff. Medical advances have people living longer and requiring more care as they age. All these
factors – increasing age of population, medical advances, and insufficient staff – can have a
negative impact on nurses. One of the most serious impacts on nurses is “nursing burnout”
which can be defined as “physical, mental and emotional exhaustion[CITATION DeK18 \l
1033 ].” Many nurses currently experience or have experienced some level of nursing burnout.
The causes of nursing burnout include people issues, job pressures, and organizational support.
One cause of nursing burnout is people issues. Nursing is a high stress job where a nurse
not only deals with a patient but also interacts with doctors, fellow co-workers, and family
members. Frequently the role of a nurse includes playing peacemaker between these various
people. Regardless of personal feelings, a nurse is expected to remain supportive, impartial, and
caring. This type of dissonance creates stress that can negatively impact a nurse. Additionally,
