Ethical Dilemma Project –Case Study.
1. The ethical dilemma I selected from the list of topics is unconscious bias in
the workplace/discrimination and equal opportunity.
2. The case I selected is a discrimination case at General Motors plant in Toledo Ohio.
Background of the Real Case
In Toledo Ohio, at the General Motors plant, 9 black men fell victim to discrimination
in the workplace. The incidents occurred from as early as 2014 to 2018. It was not just a one-
time thing. The victims, Marcus Boyd, and Derrick Brooks, who were supervisors at the motor
plant were 2 of the men involved. They said it was a violent race discrimination. Some of the
things done included the white employees hanging up “White only” signs in the bathroom, and
they said to have found nooses hanging from the ceiling in the facility. The 9 men are suing
GM are doing so because of the extreme discrimination they endured and because they said
GM allowed the racial hate and bullying to go on for so long.
The question is why? Why would someone feel the need to do something like this. It
stems from racist family and in passes down from generations. It is quite disgusting. The
victims have countless acts of racism and discrimination. “When Boyd and other black
employees complained about the racism, they were instructed to handle it themselves.”
(Klausner 2019) They were called the N word and the white employees used acronym such as
DAN which is just too graphic to repeat. One of the white supervisors even said, “what’s the big
deal about a noose, there was never a black person who was lynched that didn’t deserve it.”
