There are plenty of efforts being made to stop discrimination and encourage equal
opportunity in the workplace. Some companies still seem to struggle with it, and allow it to
happen like General Motors, but some are really going the extra mile to protect their
employees. One solution that comes to mind is the company I work for. My company is on
the correct side of this ethical dilemma, one thing I see a lot is diversity. I think it is very
important to have different races and culture in a workplace to let everyone feel welcomed.
When people are applying for a position with your company and they see that you keep
diversity at the forefront, they are more likely to come work for you. Eliminating hiring
biases will have a big effect. If a manager has a problem with eliminating hiring bias, then it
is time to eliminate him/her. Word of mouth is key for a business, and not just with the
customers, with employees to. This solution will help you grow as a company.
Another proposed solution that will have an enormous impact would be to train all
staff, from top managers all the way down the ladder. Hold monthly training to educate staff
on the importance of discrimination and equal opportunity. One company that comes to
mind that does a great job of this is Walmart. They hire everyone. They hire people with
disability, which is cool. For the people who cannot hold a regular 9-5 job, or a warehouse
job, Walmart gives them the opportunity to come in and feel like they are apart of a team.
This solution also comes with a big impact. When you walk in a Walmart and are greeted by
a person who has a disability, you gain my respect as a consumer and it will keep me
coming back as a customer.
