, History
Fingerprinting dates back to the Egyptian Era (Jain, A.K., 2010). It is a method that has
been used mostly and efficiently. In the prehistoric era paintings and writings were found with
unique prints from fingers. Once they realize this is a way to identify different people, they
capitalized on it. Back then it was tablets made from clay to conduct any legal documents or
deals.
Fingerprints were used all over the world just in many ways and reasons. China used the
thumbprint to sign papers. As time moved on, the more unique patterns found the more studies
they conducted. IN 1686, Marcello Malpighi an Anatomy Professor was the first to study prints
like the loops, spirals, and ridges of the finger but didn’t come forth with using this for
identification. They named a layer of skin after him called Malpighi layer. Research did not stop
there. They decided to explore along the same avenue but, trying to advance farther than the last
person. By 1858, Sir Herschel, William used fingerprints to sign contract with the Native
Indians. This was a method created to frighten the Native people not to refute the contract.
A British official Edward Richard Henry stationed in India began to research and develop
a system to identify criminals to serve justice. Sir Henry was the first to successfully use the
Fingerprint system. Mr. Alphonse Bertillon in Paris, France of the Bureau of ID was the first to
trial a case with a fingerprint without a suspect. The print was lifted from the homicide area and
compared to ones that had been collected on file. Back then I can guarantee that it was a lot of
manual recordkeeping going on. A lot of paper was used to keep all of this information as well.
New and improved technology have come a very long way. Department of Justice uses a
system that starts from birth. The system is still used today as a means to find fingerprint
evidence to prove a case or just to verify the person. The record keeping is no longer by hand,
the fingerprints are done on a computerized machine.
