involving orthopedic procedures, the market for this service is expected to increase. Our aging
population will require more medical services and part of these services revolves around the
wear and tear of their joints that increase services surrounding joint replacements and
procedures.
The Community Health needs assessment that was recently done for Trinity Community
Hospital reflects this prediction as well. The report shows a possible increase of 30% in the
inpatient services alone and an even higher increase to e of 350% on the outpatient services.
Orthopedic cases are expected to increase from 11,800 to 17,338, a 46% growth rate. This is why
so many projects around this service are being initiated by other healthcare organizations. With
this predicted increase in demands for orthopedic services, Trinity Community Hospital must
keep phase with the competitive aspect of the healthcare industry to be able to provide services
that its community will need.
INTERNATIONAL HEALTHCARE TRENDS
, Healthcare Industries around the world are continuously working and developing
technological advances to improve healthcare services for their patients. One of these advances
is around the development of Robotic assistance surgeries. While the United States is not very
far off when it comes to this technology advancement, other countries were able to develop
technologies around this area that is not currently available yet in the United States. Israel has
released a bionic walking assistance system called ReWalk1, ReWalk P & the latest version
ReWalk Rehabilitation 2.0. ReWalk is the first wearable commercial Robotic Exoskeleton to
receive FDA clearance for personal and rehabilitation use in the United States. It uses powered
hip and knee motion to enable patients with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) to stand upright, walk,
turn, and climb and descend stairs (ReWalk para 1). Although this was approved and has been
widely used in the United State since 2011, some of its feature that can be beneficial to the
patient is still not available in the U.S. While this technology is geared towards Paraplegic
patients, it has a great potential to be redesigned as rehabilitation therapy equipment for post-
operative hip, knee, and ankle orthopedic patients. Having a redesigned version of this piece of
technology in our Orthopedic service line can complement not just the orthopedic department but
can also bring prestige to Trinity Community Hospital as the first to develop an Orthopedic
Rehabilitation therapy equipment to assist and shorten the patient’s length of recovery after a
surgical procedure.
DISCUSSION
Trinity Community Hospital is located on an attractive 25 acres campus that is accessible
from all major roadways. The build-out of the new Orthopedic service line next to the main
hospital poses many advantages. Aside from having medical offices within the facility
compound, services will be easily resourced by expanding current services already available
from the main hospital to the new service line. The new rehabilitation facility that will be
included in the new build-out will provide an easier transition from acute care to recovery and
