Task 1

A. Nursing Theory

Throughout history, there have been many influencers that have made a mark for nursesto

follow. One theory that speaks out to me is Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Model. She

expresses that self-care that is performed independently will promote and maintain personal

well-being. Also, the theory explains that nurses should encourage patients to practice self-

care and continue to teach patients the benefits of doing so. A further explanation of the

implementation of the patient’s needs such as food, water, activity, and rest keeps the patient

engaged. The second category of Dorothea’s theory is developmental self-care which helps

prevent harmful effects such as maturation or situational reaction. Third, health deviation

requisites are needs that come up according to the patient’s condition (Alice Petiprin, 2019).

A1. Excellent Nursing Practices

In nursing, self-care is needed for the nurse and the patient. Dorothea Orem explains

that patients can perform their activities and need support from the nurse to do so. Nurses

also need to practice self-care so that they won’t experience nursing burn out and the quality

of patient care would diminish (Current Nursing, 2020). If the nurse can maintain self-care,

they will ensure that the patient does as well.

A2. Professional Practice Nursing Theory

I often have patients who feel that their diagnosis defines them and allow themselves to

neglect their needs and wants. With the overwhelming ongoing care and schedule changes,

, such as scheduling life around doctor appointments and medication schedules, their self-care

starts to diminish. These behaviors need to be monitored by the nurse because this behavior

will need to be intervened to educate them that they do have control over their everyday needs.

Knowing the different aspects of this theory allows my patient to be themselves and not labeled

sick and incompetent.

B. Contributions of 19th or 20th Century Historical Nursing Figures

Florence Nightengale is the first nursing figure that came to mind that has made an

impact in nursing. She invented the environment surrounding patients and their outcomes.

Florence Nightengale was the theorist who came up with modern nursing and laid the

foundation for pursuing nursing as a profession. She was the reason that nurses have the

opportunity to have an amazing career to care for others. Nightingale helped in so many ways

and traveled to other countries to help in times of need, and made healthcare what it is today

(Petiprin, 2020).

Another historical nursing theorist, Dorothea Dix, helped become an advocate for the

mentally ill. Dix was a nurse that initiated a statewide investigation for the conditions of the

mentally ill in Massachusetts. After Dix wrote up the report, she presented it to the state

legislature and was able to get the facilities improved. After the improvement in

Massachusetts, Dorothea Dix did investigations in New Hampshire, Louisiana, North Carolina,

and other states as well. Dix became one of the biggest advocates for the mentally ill in

history. (Guth, 2021)
