(A) Nursing Theory
In 1978, Jean Watson developed a nursing theory called The Theory of Human Caring
(Cherry & Jacob, 2019, p. 82). This theory says that caring is crucial to human healing and that
caring is used to balance the equilibrium between the patient, their self, and their surroundings.
Nurses implement 10 “carative factors” to help reestablish the health of patients. Watson
emphasized concepts of trust, sensitivity and interpersonal skills in these factors (Cherry &
Jacob, 2019, p. 82-85). Wellness is considered to be achieved when the patient experiences
balance between their mind, body and soul. This nursing theory has influenced my own nursing
values and goals because of the emphasis it puts on trust and the importance of caring. It puts the
patient at the center and expects the nurse to help the patient maintain or reestablish balance in
their lives.
(A1) Excellent Nursing Practices
All nurses must use the nursing process when working with patients. Nurses assess,
collect data, plan, implement and evaluate. Throughout this nursing process, the nurse must put
the patient at the center of their work to maintain excellent nursing practices. When the nurse
uses Watson’s model of nursing, they are helping the patient maintain balance and achieve the
best level of health possible.
(A2) Professional Practice Nursing Theory
Currently, I work on a med-surg floor that specializes in oncology and hospice. I apply
Watson’s model of nursing daily when I respect the wishes of my patients and their families. At
the end of life, patients still need support, even though life saving measures have ceased.
, Listening to my patients and listening to the family members, as they watch their loved one pass
away is one way that I show them that I care. I advocate for the patient when I feel like the
family is not listening to their concerns and I use empathy to connect with them. Watson
emphasizes trust in her theory, and I gain the patients trust by using these skills (Cherry & Jacob,
2019, p. 82-85).
(B) Contributions of 19th or 20th Century Historical Nursing Figures
In 1960, Faye Abdellah came up with a nursing theory that was unlike any up to that
point. Her theory, called Twenty-One Nursing Problems, changed the focus of nursing to patient
centered. Up to this point, nursing theories were disease centered. Abdellah was the first woman
and nurse to serve in the role of Deputy Surgeon General. She also went on to become the first
nurse officer to earn the two-star rear admiral rank in the United States Navy (“Faye Abdellah,”
2016).
Nursing theorist Dorothy Orem developed her nursing theory “Self Care Deficit’” in
1971. Orem’s theory believes that all patients want to care for themselves as much as possible
but when they are ill, they cannot. The nurse helps the patient restore their independence as part
of their wellness (Cherry & Jacob, 2019, p. 85). Orem became a nurse in the 1930’s and earned
many Honorary Doctorate degrees (“Dorothea E. Orem,” 2016).
(B1) Differences in Contributions
While both theories are both well-known and can be applied to modern nursing, there are
significant differences in the two. Orem’s theory is considered a grand nursing theory with broad
general concepts that can be applied to many different parts of nursing (“Dorothea E. Orem,”
2016), while Abdallah’s theory is called a human needs theory and only applies to specific areas
of nursing(“Faye Abdellah,” 2016). Abdellah’s theory does not give a definition of what it
means for a person to be healthy. Orem’s theory calls for the nurse to step in and help the patient
when the patient is not able to care for themselves. Abdellah’s theory focuses on care while the
