A. A nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals is the Human Caring theory
by Jean Watson. Jean Watson’s theory of human caring focuses on the role of caring in a nurse-
patient relationship. She stresses the caring theory, but to truly “get it” that person must
personally experience it. Therefore, the model is both an invitation and an opportunity to interact
with the ideas, experiment with and grow within the philosophy, and live it out in one’s personal
or professional life (Watson & Woodward, 2010, p. 351).
1. The Theory is implemented into excellent nursing practice by simply building
relationships, caring for your patients in a professional and respectful manner. It also helps you
educate and teach the patient to involve themselves in their own care, allowing them to feel like
they are involved with their care and decision making is an important part of my nursing
practice. It also includes caring not only for themselves, but their unborn child. Decisions
regarding their labor and delivery for their unborn child. After the baby is born, we now flip
caring for not only the mother but the baby as well.
2. As a labor and delivery nurse, the theory fits into my practice by building relationships
with my individual patient, at their most vulnerable time in their life allowing them to collaborate
with their partner, myself, and team to make the safest decision about their labor and delivery
care. Being present during her whole experience, showing empathy, comforting, and coaching
, her. Allowing them and assisting them with caring for their baby when she/he is born. Teaching
and educating about caring for their infant when they go home. Allowing them to ask questions,
answering in a professional manner.
B. Two historical nursing figures are Mary Breckinridge and Margaret Sanger. Both
provided women with reproductive care.
1. Mary Breckinridge became a nurse in 1910 and introduced nurse-midwifery to the
United States after spending time in France after World War I with the American Committee for
Devastated France. Breckinridge was the founder of the Frontier Nursing Service in 1925, and
she provided prenatal and postnatal nurse-midwifery care to women in Kentucky.
Margaret Sanger witnessed many deaths resulting from abortions that went wrong in New
York. Sanger defied the authorities and opened a birth control clinic in Brooklyn in 1916. She
founded the American Birth Control League in 1942, and eventually founded the Planned
Parenthood Foundation she also helped develop the first birth control pill.
Mary Breckenridge provided women prenatal and postnatal care for pregnancy, while
Margaret Sanger provided women birth control to prevent pregnancy.
2. The two historical figures influence my professional nursing practice by contributing a
lot to women and their reproductive rights. Being a maternity/labor and delivery nurse on a high-
risk maternity unit I have dealt with a lot of women with reproductive issues or failed birth
control. From women having a tough time getting pregnant to women needing birth control after
birth or having gotten pregnant with birth control on board. Reproduction can be extremely
broad but is a big part of my career.
