(A1) Responding to Mr. Newcomb’s Request
In this scenario in response to Mr. Newcomb’s request, I would acknowledge his request
but also be honest with him. As the nurse that has been caring for him I would let him know I
would not be able to fulfill his request to see his mistress before he passes due to the fact that I
would be uncomfortable lying or telling his wife who has been seeing him daily not to come.
Being his nurse, maintaining autonomy and knowing his wife has visited daily, I have developed
a close relationship with him and his wife after taking care of him. I would just feel horrible as a
nurse or even a person to lie to this woman who has been his wife for over 40 years. I understand
that Mr. Newcomb is passing and I would love to help him with any of the requests besides one
like this. My own moral beliefs and values would prevent me from being a part of this decision
to see his mistress.
I would also let him know that this will stay confidential between us and encourage him
to talk with his wife separately about this matter, he may do so on his own, but I can’t be a part
of it.
