Introduction
Wegmans is a supermarket chain that has a very strong reputation for having high quality
products and excellent service. Wegmans operates around 100 stores, mainly located in New
York. Many of the stores are superstores with 500 to 600 employees. Wegmans is different from
most supermarkets because it has special features like a full-service deli, fisherman’s
wharf, large bakery section, produce sections, pharmacy, card shop, Olde World Cheese section,
and floral shops. Quality and customer satisfaction are very important to Wegmans. Wegmans
trains new employees on how to provide good customer service and why it is important.
Wegmans also checks and maintains their product and service quality to try to have high
customer satisfaction. And if a customer is dissatisfied with something and returns it, Wegmans
offers the customer the choice of a replacement or refund. If the product they returned is a
Wegmans brand, it is sent to the test kitchen to be evaluated to try to determine the cause of the
problem and how to fix it. Wegmans also adopts new technologies to maintain a
competitive edge. Because of Wegmans’ dedication to quality and customer satisfaction, it has
been consistently ranked high on Fortune magazine’s list of the 100 Best Companies to Work
For (Stevenson, 2021).
Operations Management of Wegmans
Operations management is described as “the process that generally plans,
controls and supervises manufacturing and production processes and service delivery.
Operations management is important in a business organization because it helps effectively
manage, control and supervise goods, services and people” (exeed college, 2020).
, Wegman’s Food Markets have been known as a grocery store favorite in the United
States. With just climbing to 100 stores across the US, Wegmans has been known as a family
favorite for years. An article in Business Insider titled: “8 reasons why people are so obsessed
with Wegmans, according to stores super fans” Describes why the grocery stores beats out larger
grocery chains. Author Shoshy Ciment writes “The regional grocery chain has one of the most
loyal followings in retail, and even beat out Amazon and Costco as the most loved brand this
year” (Ciment, 2019). According to the Business Insider article Wegmans is able to compete
with larger scale grocery stores due to: customer service, selection, Wegmans-brand products,
quality, low prices, community engagement, store design, and personal store experience. These
are the main reasons Wegman loyalists choose to shop with the company instead of larger
grocery chains. Shoshy Ciment from Business Insider writes “When it comes to scale, Wegmans
is on the smaller side. Trader Joe’s has 488 stores across the US and Whole Foods has 500 stores
in North America and the United Kingdom. Wegmans just opened its 100th store in Raleigh and
broke records when more than 30,000 people came its opening day, the Raleigh News and
Observer reported” (Ciment, 2019). Wegmans’ ability of exceling in operations and the
understanding of the customer needs and wants is why the smaller scale grocery store beats
out large competitors. The company’s focus on customer service, planning, organizing,
supervising processes, and improvements for profitability help keep Wegmans on top.
Planning
Planning plays a huge role on why Wegmans has become so successful. “Wegmans has a
strong reputation for offering its customers high product quality and excellent service. Through
a combination of market research, trial and error, and listening to its customers, Wegmans has
