6100: Introduction to Clinical Mental Health Counseling
The Past, Present, and Future of Counseling
Counseling is a relatively young profession, coming about at the turn of the 1900s
(Erford & Bardhoshi, 2018). The 100+-year-old history of counseling and its accomplishments
have helped form the counseling profession's foundation and identity. Maya Angelou (n.d.) said,
“If you don't know where you've come from, you don't know where you're going” (Angelou,
n.d.) - this saying holds for today’s evolution of counseling as well. To see the progression of
counseling, we should look at the past and present occurrences of the counseling profession; and
by evaluating the past and present, we can get an idea of where the future of counseling may lead
us. The following is a preview of what counseling looks like today, the potential viewpoint on
counseling today from a counseling pioneer, and an exciting direction the future of counseling is
heading.
Present
A professional counselor's role is new in comparison to the ancient roots of other helping
professions, like traditional medicine (Guthrie et al., 2020). Yet, the counseling profession has
seen a lot of advancement in identifying a counselor’s role, narrowing its earlier ambiguous
identity over the decades. About 50 years ago, a counselor's role was to be someone who guided
decision-making and assisted people in changing their mental state (Erford & Bardhoshi, 2018).
In 2005, 31 counseling organizations came together to define counseling. This collaboration was
thought to be one of the counseling organization's most important meetings to date and is known
as 20/20: A Vision for the Future of Counseling (Kaplan et al., 2014). Through a process called
, the Delphi method, which brings together group consensus, is transparent, provides controlled
feedback, and allows for reconsideration and correction of group opinions- a definition of
counseling was born (Kaplan et al., 2014). This definition is, “Counseling is a professional
relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental
health, wellness, education, and career goals” (Kaplan et al., 2014, para. 1).
Defining counseling assisted the industry in being able to distinguish itself from other
helping professions such as psychology and social work. While counselors, psychologists, and
social workers fundamental tools and theories are similar, their education, training, and support
for their clients are where the differences are seen (Erford & Bardhoshi, 2018). Psychologists
must obtain a doctoral degree to practice, while mental health counselors and social workers can
practice with a master’s degree. Other differences are that a psychologist’s training focuses more
on long-term psychotherapy, alleviating symptoms, using testing for diagnosis, and works from
the perspective that the therapist is the expert. In contrast, counselors focus on a wellness model
under the pretense that the client knows what is best for themselves and that the client can
change their mental state, learn skills that they can apply in everyday settings, and improve their
quality of life. While social workers and counselors both focus on social justice and advocating
for their clients, social workers approach aiding their clients by focusing more on their general
barriers, available resources, and helping their clients to overcome these obstacles and access
resources (Erford & Bardhoshi, 2018).
The counseling profession works hard at distinguishing its field from other caring
professions (Erford & Bardhoshi, 2018). Through a connection of philosophical underpinnings,
counselors continue to unify under perspectives that emphasize client wellness, development,
empowerment, and prevention. The idea of wellness focuses on a holistic approach in helping the
client reach their full potential and living a satisfying life. A second approach, the developmental
perspective, views a client's position as either normal or abnormal reactions to various events or
ephemeral responses to change (Erford & Bardhoshi, 2018). A third perspective is
