Perceptions of Social Class
The tri-racial system of race and ethnicity is a system that is new to the United
States. It was not until the twentieth century that the bi-racial order emerged into a tri-racial
system which meant that whites vs non-whites were no longer. As the United States became
more diversified with inclusivity of Latinos and Latin Americans the system shifted from a
bi-racial into a tri- racial system which included a system of whites, honorary whites, and
lastly collective blacks. Latin Americans became apart of the United States population
heavily and in fact the blacks had surpassed by Latinos as the largest minority group, and it
was noted in the 2001 Census that Hispanics were 12 per cent of the population and blacks
12 per cent (Bonilla-Silva, 2004).
The change of bi-racial to tri-racial system was impactful and had a major impact on
societal perceptions of race and ethnicity. Firstly, if we look into the new tri-racial system
used in the United States we observe that it is mainly based on skin color. The three
categories’ whites, honorary whites and collective blacks are three ways in which they
separate different demographics and is used to pinpoint certain individuals. According to
Bonilla-Silva, as an example, “Whites” are the new whites (Russiansa Albanians, etc.) and
assimilated white Latinos and “Collective Black” being Vietnamese Americans and Laotian
Americans at the least (pg.933,
