Social psychology examines how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by
human interaction. Conformity, obedience and helping behaviors are central concepts in social
psychology that describe how a person or group is socially influenced. The impact of social
context on the need to conform, can impact individuals, groups, and the community negatively.
Individuals
Individuals can be negatively impacted by the need to conform, obedience, and helping
behaviors if the influencing object behavioral patterns are negative. Conformity can be described
as social norms, unspoken rules, agreeing with others, or mimicking behaviors because others in
the group are doing so. Hock (2020) indicate that individuals tend to conform due to special
factors such as, social pressure, social support, attraction and commitment to a group, size of the
group, and gender. Hock (2020) indicate that in one study, student’s awareness on risk-factors
associated with HIV/AIDS, conformity to peer pressure was named as the link to why students
engaged in risky-behaviors, despite their awareness of HIV/AIDS.
Groups
The pressure from groups play a significant role into the concept of conformity. Hock
(2020) indicate the 60 participants were given a description of an incident that may cause
fatalities. When alone, individuals answered all deferred, but when placed in a group setting
individuals responses were strongly encouraged by the group. Conformity can have negative
impacts in the group setting, for instance, if an individual is being cyber bullied by a group,
