Schizophrenia Over Time: Experiences Living with the

Illness

Week 7 Assignment

Schizophrenia is a disorder that affects a person’s everyday functioning with life. There is no
exact cause of schizophrenia and it can come from a person’s environment, genetics, and chemical
imbalance. Schizophrenia is a long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation
between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings,
withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental
fragmentation.

Describe McGough experiences with schizophrenia. Identify the onset, associated features
(positive and negative symptoms) development and course.

Cecilia McGough was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the 11 th grade when she started to have
symptoms of hallucinations. McGough is currently an astronomer, activist and writer at Penn State
Schreyer Honor College. Cecilia’s symptoms started in high school and later became unmanageable her
freshman year old college. She discussed having hallucinations of spiders that legs made the sound of
children crying, clowns that would taunt her daily, and a girl with a knife that used her insecurities
against her. She stated that the girl would often stab her in the face with the knife. McGough also
mentioned that she struggled to complete daily assignments and routines. She described her symptoms as
living with awake nightmares. Cecilia tried to get assistance for her hallucinations from others around
her family, friends, and dorm assistance workers but it didn’t work. McGough mother told her not to get
professional help due to others looking at her like she was crazy and the dorm assistance workers called
the police to escort her to a facility. She then tried to commit suicide due to the embarrassment. Eight
months, after receiving treatment Cecilia made a blog about her experience and illness. She stated that
she believed her disorder came from a chemical imbalance that triggered the hallucinations. Positive
symptoms are those symptoms that were not present in the patient but appeared after the disorder
(Atadoknt, Ebrahimzadent, Milaeeli, 2019). Cecilia’s positive symptoms were running thoughts,
hallucinations, and delusions. Negative symptoms are more difficult to diagnose but are associated with
high morbidity as they disturb the patients’ emotions and behaviors (Patel el al, 2014). Cecilia’s negative
symptoms were disinterest, absence of feelings and poor or weird social ability. Cecilia is currently
managing her hallucinations and identifying the triggers associated with those hallucinations. McGough
is currently the founder of a non-profit organization designed to help others that suffer from
schizophrenia be provided with resources and services to live a productive life.

Explain how you would use the Clinician Rated Dimensions and World Health Organization
Disability
Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS) to help confirm the diagnosis.

The Clinician Rated Dimensions is an eight item assessment used to rate the severity of the
mental health symptoms (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Utilizing this assessment tool will
help determine if the illness is mild, moderate, or severe. This will later help with the intensity of the
treatment involving the client. It can also develop a treatment plan and decision making skills that are
