There were simultaneous failures between government agencies that lead to the water
crisis in Flint, Michigan. City officials did not adhere to the lead and copper rule and the
Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act when faced with monetary challenge (University of
Michigan School of Public Health, 2018). They immaturely made a decision that impacted
thousands of
low-income families in the community. The cries of the citizens in Flint, Michigan, were unheard
of until the social issues gained national attention. City officials undertook this issue poorly,
causing at least 12,000 children at risk for brain and nervous system damage (University of
Michigan School of Public Health, 2018). City officials have taken this as a lesson learned and
are in the process of revising laws that will benefit the public’s health safety. It should not have
taken a careless decision for government bodies to ensure public health safety as we advance.
The presenting laws did have some weaknesses as they did not fully protect the public's
health. I have to say it is the structure of the government agency's culture that impacted citizens
in Flint as well. Legislators can revise the laws to align with the community's needs, but it is
upon the administrators of government agencies to take the law into full effect. The most
prominent law that impacted the community is the Lead and Copper Rule. In 1991, the
environmental protection agency established an order to control lead and copper in drinking
water (EPA, n.d.). Entities are supposed to monitor the drinking conditions, not allowing it to go
over 15 ppb. If the lead and copper levels exceed stated levels, the state must report the news to
the public, so necessary steps for safety are taken place.
