Through Technology
Telemetry Monitoring for COVID-19 Patients and Improved Outcomes
The purpose of this paper is to review and reflect on the impacts of clinical systems on
outcomes and efficiencies of nursing care practice and healthcare delivery. Technology is
evolving more and more every day. Not only is it evolving in everyday life, but it is also
evolving in healthcare. There are currently systems within healthcare facilities that are designed
to collect information such as telemetry. There are specific systems used for critical care
environments such intensive care units and emergency rooms. According to Kristy Boldt (2019),
The American College of Emergency Physician’s (ACEP) Policy on Health Information
Technology states that an Emergency Department Information System is an extended EHR
system designed specifically to manage data and simplify processes in support of Emergency
Department patient care and operations. With the current pandemic, we are seeing an abundance
of critical patients with COVID, that needs continuous monitoring in the emergency room.

Assessing QT interval in COVID-19 patients: safety of hydroxychloroquine-
, azithromycin combination regimen. International Journal of Cardiology, 324, 242-
Bernardini et al provided a study on patient’s who was positive for Covid-19 and
presented with prolonged QT intervals after being treated with hydroxychloroquine-
azithromycin combination. Covid-19 presents as a respiratory illness such as pneumonia
or bronchitis. As we all know any respiratory illness can lead to respiratory distress. In
this study they have found that Covid can also affect the cardiovascular system. They
also have found that a couple medications that are presented as treatment for Covid also
can lead to cardiovascular issues Bernardini et al., 2021.
Azithromycin and Hydroxychloroquine are the two medications that were
concerned to treat Covid. The issue with these two medications that lead to the need for
patients to be on telemetry while being treated, is that these medications are known to
cause prolonged QT intervals. If these two are known for this issue and we are treating a
patient with Covid causes an increase risk for arrhythmic sudden death or torsade de
pointes Bernardini et al., 2021. Which in turn increases the need for telemetry for these
patients.
This study collected data on patients who were hospitalized for Covid and
received the two medications for there treatment. There was a total of 112 patients in the
study. All though all deaths in this study occurred due to respiratory failure or other
respiratory issues, there was a great percentage of patients who had non-fatal arrythmias

As the Covid pandemic continues, they are more and more data collected and in
turn we find out that more signs and symptoms occur with Covid. In this article
