Post how a social work administrator’s personal leadership philosophy and style
may influence a human services organization’s culture.
A social worker has their own philosophy and leadership that can set the tone of an
organization as well as the staff and the people served. There are three common types of
leadership styles: authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire (Northouse, 2018). Each style can
potentially influence how staff and other individuals respond to you as a leader, how the work
is presented, and how the staff completes their work.
Authoritarian leadership is a style characterized by individual control over all decisions with
little input from the members of the group. Democratic leadership occurs when individuals who
are characterized as unequal by the standards of hierarchy, have shared power and are included
in all decision making. Laissez-faire is a leadership style where the leader takes a “hands off”
approach and allows the group members to make the decisions.
Explain how the organization’s culture might influence a social work
administrator’s personal leadership style.
There are numerous ways for culture to influence a social work administrator’s personal
leadership experience. One way is through the style of the leader such as an authoritarian leader
can make the work environment tense, controlled, and even uncomfortable because the group
members have no say. On the other hand, if the leader is democratic, the work atmosphere
could be more comfortable and positive since the group members can be involved in the
decisions.
