In the case of the Levy family, there has been a lack of communication and understanding
between Jake and Sheri. Jake has recently served in Iraq where he encountered and experienced a
variety of stress and trauma. Sheri was at home while Jake was deployed taking care of the home
and the children. This leaves Sheri at a disadvantage as she cannot relate to what Jake is going
through. Jake has trouble communicating his feelings to Sheri and Sheri cannot truly understand
how Jake is feeling mentally and emotionally as she has not experienced the trauma Jake went
through in Iraq. This had led to many arguments between Jake and Sheri. The tension and lack of
communication between the two has led Jake to drink to numb the pain he is experiencing. Sheri
is pregnant and due to deliver soon. This has caused some the social worker to worry if Jake can
step and take an active role in this child’s life. There is a lot of information to process in this case
study before any intervention can take place. Social workers in the field face the challenge of
learning how to make sense of the numerous amounts of information that is received throughout
the course of a single therapeutic session. (McTighe, 2011).
A couple strategies that could be implemented to debrief the social worker would be to
identify any internal and external biases that could prevent adherence to the NASW Code of
Ethics, staying impartial and not being influenced by personal feelings, and biases when
considering and representing the facts. When in a supervisory position it is important to self-
reflect because it can create a balance between their unsuspected personal countertransference
and their appropriate empathetic responses. One measure of examination “calls for development
