CRJS 2001: Criminology and Social Control

Social Control Theory: Examples of Social Control, Systems, and Agents

Social control theory suggests that a person can resist the impulse to commit a crime

because of the consequences of this behavior; further that a primary cost of criminal behavior is

the disapproval by the people that the offender cares most about and that when individuals

choose to conform to the rules of a society, it is due to socialization and maintained by ties to

people and institutions such as family members, friends, schools, and jobs (criminal-

justice.ireasearchnet.com, n.d.).

Modern control theorists believe that people have free will to deviate and need controls

in their lives to keep them from deviant acts (Inderbitzin, Bates, & Gainey, 2017). Social control

theory also suggests that people recognize the advantages of criminal acts and can invent and

execute all types of criminal acts without any particular motivation (criminal-

Two examples of social control include informal and formal social control. Informal

social control comes from the approval or disapproval of people we associate with and consider

important such as friends, family, and colleagues (Social Control: Definitions & Forms, 2018).

Formal social control refers to systems or organizations that use strict rules, morals, values, and

sanctions that we are told that we must obey, such as the government, which uses laws and the

court system to exercise social control (Social Control: Definitions & Forms, 2018).
