Learning Theories
Researching many different types of learning theories has taught me the importance of being
proficient in many to be able to cater to the needs of the students in my class. Theories allow a
structured and organized approach to a phenomenon (Henson, 2015). Some of the learning
theories that resonated with me are the constructivism learning theory and social development
theory. The constructivist learning theory discusses the importance of permitting the students to
discover the new content and create connections to previous understanding (Henson, 2015).
Constructivism is essential for a teacher to help bring awareness that every child is different and
bring their past experiences to the classroom. When using the constructivist learning theory,
instructors are encouraged to engage students and provide them opportunities to explore the
content through discussion as a mode of learning (Instructional Design.org, 2015). I believe this
learning theory is critical because in understanding this theory, teachers will get to know their
students personally to relate content to their students. I see this learning theory being used in my
classroom because I spend ample time getting to know my students and their interests to help
engage them in learning.
I also connected with the social development theory because of my use of the zone of
proximal development (ZPD) in my classroom. ZPD is considered the area most appropriate for
the learner to engage in the material either independently or in collaboration, without becoming
overly frustrated (Eun, 2019; Instructional Design.org, 2015). In combination with the
constructivist theory, recognizing that scholars bring different experiences to the classroom and
other knowledge can be significant when children are collaborating to complete a task. Lev
, Vygotsky has developed this theory to explain that collaboration and social interactions
significantly impact cognitive development (Instructional Design.org, 2015).
Learning Theory I Find Interesting
One learning theory I was particularly interested in was the theory of multiple intelligences. I
find this theory interesting because it considers that some people are more talented in some areas
than others. Multiple intelligences suggest that people process information according to their
specific intelligence implying that teaching and learning should focus on that particular
intelligence per person (Instructional Design.org, 2015). I disagree with this particular theory
because while some people may be more musically inclined, it should not deter anyone from
learning through song. In my opinion, this also takes away from the growth mindset that I
attempt to instill into my scholars because I wish for them all to understand they can learn
anything as long as they put in the effort. However, I agree that when a child is more capable in a
specific intelligence without practice, they could be more interested in completing the activity
and therefore be more engaged in the learning process. Understanding multiple intelligence can
impact my teaching because it can correlate to the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) that I
currently use in my teaching practices. The expectation of UDL is to ensure diverse students are
being provided multiple points of access to content through various means of representation,
engagement, and expression (Ross, 2019). In coordination with multiple intelligences, I can
provide differentiated instruction to create highly engaging lessons for my scholars.
Why Learning Theories are Important
“A theory of education contains generalizations that are applicable to many situations”
(Henson, 2015, p. 151). It is important to understand learning theories so educators can provide
the best possible education to the students. Accomplished teachers continuously change their
methods of teaching to become more effective (Henson, 2015). The curriculum is decided by
teachers and must be guided and created with specific students in mind (Laureate Education,
