This semester we were asked to calculate our carbon footprint to see how we are
affecting the carbon emission on our planet. My carbon footprint number that was generated
by the EPA was 81,542. Based off that number I evaluated that my best course of action to
reduce my carbon footprint would be to recycle during this project. Recycling is a great
starting point to reducing waste in landfills, lowering greenhouse gases, and reusing
recyclables for other items or objects. My hypothesis was that if my household were to
recycle our cans and bottles while potentially switching to eliminating both products in our
house this will lower our grocery bill, reduce our carbon footprint, and eliminating trashing
on consumption unnecessarily. We know that the model for reducing waste is Reduce, Reuse,
and Recycle. I was tracking the mentality on if recycling to see if it would spark joy or a level
of frustration as the project progresses.
At the beginning of the project, I found that I focused a lot on recycling – it was
almost obsessive. I also found that it was incredibly tough for me to remember to recycle
right away. It was common for me to trash upon consumption when I really should have gone
to the recycling bin. Throughout this project I found that plastics and cans are big for
corporations and corporations really profit from them. My main goal was to change my
behavior and health habits by reducing soda cans and drinking more water through a reusable
