Community Teaching Plan: Teaching Experience
Community health plays an essential role in the prevention of falls and related injuries.
Through the implementation of primary prevention efforts, such as community education, nurses
are able to prevent injury and help the community remain in good health. This essay will discuss
a nursing student’s teaching experience at Living free Homecare in Maricopa County, Arizona.
A summary of the community teaching plan will be provided along with the epidemiological
rationale for fall prevention education. This essay will also evaluate the presentation and the
community response to the teaching. Lastly, this essay will address the strengths and weaknesses
of the presentation.
Summary of Teaching Plan
The community teaching plan was created for the older adult population (65 and older)
in Maricopa County, Arizona. The presentation took place at Living Free Homecare via zoom
and recorded video presentation. The teaching covered fall prevention strategies and aimed to
reduce the rate of emergency department visits due to falls among older adults. The four
objectives of
the presentation focused on the identification of fall risks, potential fall hazards within the home,
the proper use of assistive equipment, and the implementation of balance/strength-building
exercises. This presentation utilized the Cognitive Learning Theory through the use of the teach-
, back method and the implementation of a question and answer session. The presentation was
evaluated through the use of an anonymous survey that members of the audience completed to
rate the presentation and add suggestions for improvement. The effectiveness of the teaching
was evaluated on a one on one basis, as the home health aides assessed the community
member’s understanding of the presentation and the behavioral changes that followed.
First Objective
The first objective of the presentation was for members of the community to identify
their own personal fall risks. In order to accomplish this goal, members of the community were
taught about the different factors that increase an individual's risk of falling. Fall risk factors
include advanced age, previous falls, muscle weakness, gait/balance issues, decreased sensory
perception, chronic illness, and the use of medications. After identifying general risk factors
community members were asked to take a few minutes to identify their own personal risk
factors and write them down on the designated area of their handout.
Second Objective
The second objective of the presentation was for community members to recognize
hazards that increase the risk of falling in their own homes. To accomplish this objective, the
audience was taught about specific hazards that can lead to falls. Potential hazards include
clutter on the floor/walkway, slippery surfaces, dim lighting, loose handrails, loose /unstable
carpets,
and inappropriate furniture placement. The audience was then shown a picture with various fall
hazards present and they were asked to identify 5 fall hazards in the picture. After the
community members properly identified potential hazards, they were asked to take a few
minutes to assess their own homes. Once hazards were identified, members were asked to make
a plan to remove these hazards and write it down on the designated area of their handout.
