Introduction to the criminal justice system
Unit 7 Assignment
CJ101
A trial is a structured process, Where the facts of a case are presented in a court of law to a
jury of their peers, And then a jury will have the right to decide if a defendant is guilty, Or
not guilty during a trial. The prosecutor uses evidence and witnesses to prove to the jury
beyond a reasonable dought that the defendant committed the crime /crimes. The defendant
has the rights to an attorney if they can not afford one the court will make sure that the
defendant has counsel and only then will the defendant will have the chance to present their
evidence and witnesses to present their side of the case Opening statements allow the
prosecutor and the defense attorneys to briefly tell their accounts of the events that have
taken place. Their statements are short and the framework of the case ( outline ) these
statements do not include witnesses or evidence the prosecutor makes their statements first
because the government has the burden of proving the defendant committed the crime an
example of opening and closing arguments :
Opening: The case that I want to present before you today is an unusual case involving a
woman that was prescribed pain medicine for a femur injury that she obtained from a car
accident and later became addicted and this addiction has ruined her life she wasn’t the only
victim that fell prey to this doctor some have recently overdosed from the medication this dr
has prescribed
the evidence that I will present today will show that this doctor that took an oath to help
these people further destroyed them I ask that after you listen to the evidence today that you
will see that the defendant is guilty of doctor misconduct
