Unit One Journal – Zinsser and Your Writing
The fifth journal entry captures some of my thoughts on my writing skill progress and thoughts
on Thomas’s video. One change that I have noticed in my writing skill is the use of precise and
concise sentences. Avoiding unnecessary words like ‘very’, ‘extremely’, etc. It does not provide
any information to the user. I am now writing with more vigor than ever before, thanks to
Zinsser’s writing principles and the art of business writing. When writing, I now have more
clarity and honesty than ever before in my thought processes.
I have minimized using ‘but’ and ‘however’ as Thomas mentions in his video. There are cases
where it is unavoidable to use them. My topic sentences have improved. They are less cluttered
and more direct with a clear message. I am still working on further improving myself in
information selection especially when there is a lot of research material. As Thomas points out in
the video, less is more when it comes to information sharing with the reader through writing,
though relevant supporting information must be provided. I have started using the sectional or
bin approach, especially when writing a paper. While researching, I write relevant information
from various papers/journals into the section, which might better support that paragraph or
section. It helps in realizing the flow of the paper and with using relevant information only.
It also ensures all necessary in-text citations that are required get added. It ensures that credit and
respect are given to the original author/writer whose paper helped with my research. As Thomas
and every author/writer state, it is vital to attribute content where it's due while writing a
paper/article. Also, ensure all assumptions get stated accordingly. If there is something that one is
, not aware of, ensure to note it down in the paper. If possible, provide some ideas/solutions that
might help in filling that gap. These are some of the points where I think my writing has
improved and some areas where I will keep working.
