Instructional Unit Overview

This instructional unit is focused on phonetic awareness in a kindergarten classroom.

Within every classroom there is an academic division between learners, and the goal of these

lessons is to bridge the gap between the highly proficient learners and the minimally proficient

learners. The instructional goal is that the students will be able to correctly identify 26/26 capital

letters, lower case letters and the letter sound without verbal cues. The tools available to students

to help drive their learning and growth will be as follows: Starfall computer software and

YouTube Learning videos to include all learners and give them extra stimulus. We will have

small reading groups where students are separated by academic level to ensure needs-based

focus, and within the classroom I will be using these curriculum models to drive my instruction

Heggerty, Reading Street and Being A Writer.


Unit Lesson Plans




Lesson Plan #1 Title: Letter Names



Performance Objective: Students will recite the letter names and letter sounds we have covered

in class with 100% accuracy.

, Time: 20 minutes

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities: We will listen to The Letter Factory on YouTube and play
the pause game- where I pause the video and we talk about what we JUST learned then we
continue watching.

Step 2: Content Presentation: We will use the letter cards with image cues to start our lesson-

we will focus on the letters P,S,A,T,M,I,C,N. With the letter cards we will go through them and

say the letter name and sound, then after we cycle through them, we will do the Alphabet song.

We will also use rapid letter naming to prepare learners for AIMS Web type assessments where

they are timed.


Step 3: Learner Participation: We will speed read the letters on a sheet of paper and time each

student- the fastest gets goldfish.


Step 4: Assessment: Using the index letter cards we will “slide up” the letter name/sound when

the teacher calls the card. For example, “Slide and cover the letters that say /t/ /t/…. Let me

see…. Tt good- name something that starts with a Tt.


Step 5: Follow-Through Activities: This activity will be the Eraser game with the white boards-

I will dictate 8 letter names and sounds- they will write them on the board, as a group we will

check everyone's board and make sure they have the correct letter, we will talk about it, and fix

anything we need to fix…. Then we put our markers away and use the erasers to erase the letter

dictated, at the end only one letter will be left and if their board matches the teachers they get

“Smarties.”
