A Nonfictional Leader

Eric Messer displays excellent understanding and patience in his leadership style. He is

responsible for the customer service, recruitment, and operations of a college in upstate New

York. Though it is a high-demand job that requires a cutthroat mentality, he consistently treats

his employees with those two qualities. When sales goals are not met, he will meet with

managers to work with them to improve the results. He demonstrates patience by coming

alongside the managerial staff to help them, rather than bringing down discipline on team

members. He also demonstrates great understanding by working with the operations team to give

them the tools they need to do their job most effectively. He will never approach the team in a

laissez-faire manner but instead will put resources into equipping his team with whatever they

need.

Dilemma Scenario

Deontological Perspective:

The deontological idealogy holds a strict adherence to principles and does not take

context into the decision-making. The deontological perspective would say that because the

salesperson consciously signed the non-disclosure agreement, the ethical decision is to uphold

your end of the agreement and not say anything. Deontologists determine which decision to

make on what’s right on broad and or using the universal ethical principles such as honesty,

fairness and loyalty. The deontologist holds that some decisions cannot be justified by their

, outcomes. In this case, it is immoral to break one’s word, even if there would be a positive

outcome by doing so.

Consequentialist Perspective:

The consequentialist center their concentration on the ends or the results of a particular

decision. A well known theory in the consequentalists perspective is Utilitarianism. The primary

thought in that theory is the most ethical decision is the one that does the most good and the least

harm. The utilitarian would consider the consequences of all of those involved, both from the

company perspective and the consumer perspective. This is the overall perspective to the

consequentialist approach. Because the consequentialist would consider all of the stakeholders in

the situation, they would disclose the information to the public as it would do the most good. It

would benefit the general public, patients’ families, and ultimately it would keep the company

protected from lawsuits by disclosing the risks.

Cognitive Moral Development

- Concern for the greater good is a postconventional perspective, as it is concerned with

society rather than rules and laws.

- Considering the loss of a job falls into the preconventional perspective since it considers

the obedience and punishment of a particular action.

- The principle of justice is concerned with conventional morality. Justice is tied directly to

law and order. Law and order is a crucial proponent of traditional morality.

- Like the principle of justice, an individual concerned with the laws of the situation is

keyed to conventional morality.

- An individual concerned with personal gain would fall into the preconventional ideology
