Impact of the Problem on the Patient
No one likes to go to the doctor’s office or even the hospital. This is especially true for
pediatrics. Children have a harder time grasping the needs and why things need to be done to
them for them. A traumatic experience as a child going to see the doctor or the hospital can lead
to the child avoiding going to the doctor’s office as an adult which can lead to declined health
and things that could have been prevented.
Impact of the Problem on the Organization
The impact of the problem for the organization is when a patient and their family has a bad
experience they will leave a bad score and or a bad satisfaction rating. This can affect funding for
the organization and risk losing current and future patients.

, Research Article Title
The effect of medical clowning on reducing pain, crying, and anxiety in children aged 2–
10 years old undergoing venous blood drawing a randomized controlled study
Background Introduction
A pediatric patient is a special patient because they cannot always understand the need
and the way for medical procedures. Thus, making medical appointments and hospitalizations
traumatic and unpleasant for all.
Methodology;
This study was on children having IV catheter insertion and venous puncture lab draws.
There were three different methods used to see which one had the least amount of crying time
before, during and after the procedure.
The first group had nothing done. The child went to the exam room with a parent had the
lab draw or the IV placed and left. The second group had an anesthetic cream placed before the
procedure waited for it to set in and then had the procedure done. The third group was greeted
and entertained by a medical clown. This clown is specially trained in humor and distraction.
Some of the techniques used by the clown were making balloon animals, funny actions, and
singing. For the participants with the clown, they started interactions with the clown ten minutes
prior to the procedure.
Level of Evidence: 1
Data Analysis
For the analysis of variance ANOVA and unpaired two-tailed t tests were used.
