Language Proficiency Assessments

Introduction
ELL learners come into our classrooms with varying levels of English proficiency. Assessments
are also imperative when teachers are seeking information on the language proficiencies of our
English Language Learners. These assessments drive the type of language instruction that takes
place in the classroom and will help in meet the language learning needs of the students.
There are many types of tests that we can use to guide the language learning for our students. In
this paper, I will address three types of assessments: the WIDA Online Screener, ELPAC, and
the TOEFL ITP. I will explain how the test is used, tests specifics, sample questions, how it is
administered, and the role of the teacher. I will also share some similarities and differences
among these assessments.

Language Proficiency Assessments

World Class Instructional Design Assessment (WIDA)
The World Class Instructional Design Assessment or WIDA, is an online screener used to assess
K-12 learners to determine whether a learner qualifies for ELL services within the school system.
There are four areas of language that are specifically designed in determining the learner’s need.
They are listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The speaking and writing sections are
performance based and the responses given on those section drive the types of questions given
on the listening and reading sections. The listening and reading sections are multiple choice.
The answers given will establish adjustments made by the test and determines if the student
needs easier or more challenging question sets (WIDA, n.d.).

WIDA Sample Question for Writing
The student is presented this picture about building birdhouses. The last picture is missing. The
student is then asked to write about each picture, using a word box provided, including what they
think the last picture should be about (ACCESS Test Practice and Sample Items | WIDA, n.d.).

WIDA Sample Question for Listening
The student will listen to a story about a picnic in the park. The story is only played once. Upon
completion of listening, the student will respond to the scripted questions by marking on the
provided illustration, what the students will be doing a particular building (marking a picture of a
