Week 3 Discussion: Healthcare Technology; Local, National, and Global Considerations
Imagine that you are a public health nurse, and you and your colleagues have determined that
the threat of a deadly new strain of influenza indicates a need for a mass inoculation program in
your community. What public health data would have been used to determine the need for such
a program? Where would you locate public health data? What data will be collected to
determine the success of such a program? How might you communicate this to other
communities or internationally?

, What public health data would have been used to determine the need for such a program?
As a public health nurse any treat of a deadly new stain of influenzas would need a mass
inoculation program to curtail the threat and prevent any serious outbreaks and deaths in the
community. To determine the need for any public health epidemic I would gathered information
from the national data base tracking system from the Center for Disease Control Prevention
(CDC) to determine the number of cases found, location , age group , economic status ,
immunization history , strain of virus , family units or travel history of the infected people to
show what section or sections of the community is infected and what strain of vaccination and
interventions is needed to eradicated the virus.
Where would you locate public health data?
To gather this public health data, I would use the CDC’s national laboratory tracking system it
provides information about tuberculosis (TB), HIV, influenza, other illness such as hospital
infections; about sicknesses you can get from dirty or contaminated food and water. Also the
CDC Global Disease Detection program, which monitor, detect, report and respond to health
threats internationally, this information can be compared to the cases in my community, trends in
other communities and measures to eradicate virus.
What data will be collected to determine the success of such a program?
To determine if the program is successful, I would gather information about the before and after
interventions to determine if the treatment given to the infected individuals and preventative
vaccination that were given to the rest of the community worked by no records of individuals
reportedly infected or died from the influenza virus .
How might you communicate this to other communities or internationally?
To communicate this information about the deadly influenzas virus that was found in my
community I would utilize the CDC Wide-ranging OnLine Data for Epidemiologic Research
(WONDER) because it makes information available to public health professionals and the public
at large however this website is a great reference for public health research, decision making,
priority setting, program evaluation, and resource allocation. Having my report with pertinent
data for what could have been a potential epidemic with resolution will be very useful report to
the medical community and protecting local and internationally communities.
