Decision-Making Paper
Every person involved in the criminal justice system has to make decisions the effective
ones are group decisions. In our prison system lives depend on each decision, many variables
and influencers are focused on safety. Within the field of Corrections decisions are often
influenced by people of power, even the president of the United States and celebrities can have
an impact on a person’s freedom. Even the rich and famous lawyers play a part in helping judges
and others involved make decisions. The way the evidence in presented and the communication
efforts can make a difference. Communication skills and training lead to improvements, they can
lead to a successful department and daily experience. In the field of corrections when effective
communication is absent tragedies often occur and inmates have more of a chance of
reoffending. It takes all employees and staff to be on the same team and look to the experts for
advice and guidance. There are many factors that may affect a group’s effectiveness. For
instance, the environment or living conditions are a big part of how the inmates respond to the
time they spend in the prison system.
Many factors affect the correction officers and managements overall effectiveness, most
of the time we can choose to be positive or negative in our communication with others when
working on a team in the prison setting emotions could create barriers for us that might not have
been an issue if we had a good attitude.
Communication Barriers, (n.d.), “Attitudinal Barriers Attitudinal barriers are behaviors or
perceptions that prevent people from communicating effectively. Attitudinal barriers to
communication may result from personality conflicts, poor management, resistance to change, or
, a lack of motivation. Effective receivers of messages should attempt to overcome their own
attitudinal barriers to facilitate effective communication”.
In the criminal justice system inmates may have the most difficulty with communication
problems which creates barriers that may be the hardest to correct. A couple of strategies that
may help remove some of these barriers may include building self-esteem through education,
also behavioral therapy both group and individual.
Communication Barriers. (n.d.), “Psychological Barriers The psychological state of the
receiver will influence how the message is received. For example, if someone has personal
worries and is stressed, they may be preoccupied by personal concerns and not as receptive to the
message as if they were not stressed. Stress management is an important personal skill that
affects our interpersonal relationships. Anger is another example of a psychological barrier to
communication. When we are angry it is easy to say things that we may later regret and also to
misinterpret what others are saying”.
Communication channels could be improved language and cultural diversity barriers can
be responsible for communication problems within the criminal justice system depending on the
location and department. One of the strategies that would be of great value to any criminal
justice department would be hiring of employees who are from different cultures and ethnic
groups this can help bridge the communication gap. An example of this barrier could occur when
officers and dispatchers are unable to effectively communicate with the public or other
employees during an emergency situation. According to Weaver, (1992), “As society and the
law enforcement workforce become more diverse, however, the ability to manage cultural
diversity becomes essential. Police officers can become more culturally aware by knowing their
own culture; learning about the various cultures found within the agency and in the community;
understanding the dynamics of cross-cultural communication, adjustment, and conflict; and
developing cross-cultural communicative, analytical, and interpretative skills. The criminal
