actions. Positive, professional behavior and attitudes are a must in the criminal justice system;
unfortunately, today these traits are not enough to operate a high-performance team. The biggest
challenges can occur when there is a weak link, the whole system can suffer jeopardizing even
those employees who give their best every day. What happened at the Capitol recently is an
example of the loss of a great police officer and other lives because several incompetent people
were involved and created one of the worst challenging days our country has experienced in
years. Even employees of our government and the Capitol police were not displaying traits or
simple characteristics of high-performance team members. The words “motivating others” stands
out in the following quoted text and would seem to be a common characteristic of an effective
manager or leader. Campbell, & Campbell Consulting, (2011) “The core competencies presented
for managers and supervisors emphasize not only the value of capabilities such as oral and
written communication, strategic thinking, program planning and performance assessment,
managing change, problem solving and decision making, and a knowledge of the criminal justice
system, but also skills such as interpersonal relationships, motivating others, developing direct
reports, managing conflict, initiating collaboration, and team building and attributes of character
that correctional leaders need, including a strong sense of ethics and values”
