According to the ACLU, “private prison companies essentially admit that their business

model depends on locking up more and more people. The American economy should not include

locking people in cages for profit” [ CITATION ACL1 \l 1033 ]. Disgusting! In 2019, privately

operated facilities held 7% of state prisoners and 16% of federal prisoners [ CITATION Car201 \l

1033 ]. Currently, the US has the highest prison population in the world and nearly 2.2 million

people in prison [ CITATION Bis20 \l 1033 ]. As a sister of a former inmate, I thought long and

hard about this. My brother served 10 years in a government-run prison in Ohio. While in prison,

my brother took advantage of the programs afforded to him to better himself. Although it took for

him to go to prison to change, I can attest that my brother is rehabilitated, wiser and a man of

action; I’m extremely proud of him. After conducting research and comparing the pros and cons

of privatized and public prisons, I have concluded that I am not supportive of privatized prisons,

this paper will discuss why.



Advantages of Private Prisons. Private prisons are potentially cheaper for taxpayers.

Regulating prisons is an expensive, time-consuming and labor-intensive and therefore requires

the government to spend a lot of money. Investing in a private prison lessens the government’s

workload. Since it no longer has to manage a lot of prisons, it can focus its time and workforce

on other public and social services [ CITATION Bis20 \l 1033 ].
