Career Counseling for Diverse Populations
The environments in which people live and learn have an enormous impact on career
development. The opportunities offered to people, the tools at their disposal, and the social
framework through which all individuals live all interact and contribute to their sense of self and
their knowledge and understanding of different career options. Therefore it is crucial that a
number of personal and societal factors are taken into account when considering the process of
individual career development.
Individual and Societal Factors
Gender
A powerful socialization process takes place from the moment a child is born, in which
girls and boys learn what is anticipated and socially appropriate behavior based on their gender.
This socialization process affects the way they play, which leisure and learning activities they
choose to participate in, and the roles they perceive as acceptable to develop into according to
their gender. This socialization also influences how other people in a child’s life will interact
with them and the types of behaviors that will be reinforced for children. Researchers suggest
that they have formed a sense of what professions are acceptable and unacceptable for their
gender by the time children are 8 years old. They also develop a sense of what professions are
appropriate for their gender and unacceptable. Children’s experiences and perceptions of gender
roles therefore have an effect on the job types they consider as teenagers and young adults, such
as nurse for women, and doctor for men (Brown, 2016).
, As adults, gender socialization tends to have a significant effect on men and women's
career growth. The stress of being successful and caring for the family can affect the kinds of
occupations and roles that men and women consider acceptable. Women who work outside
the home, for example, may feel that their responsibilities and duties at work and at home
are in conflict with each other. Men may have enormous pressure to succeed at work and to
be the family's breadwinner. In addition, the personal identity of a man can be heavily
correlated with his career, causing the psychological well-being of a man to be at risk in the
event of job loss or failure in the work environment. While shifting social norms and job
opportunities have contributed to an increase in the number of women entering traditionally
male-dominated occupations (and, to a lesser degree, men entering female-dominated
occupations such as counseling and nursing), the effect of gender socialization on career
growth continues to be a major source of influence on both men and women's career choices
and satisfaction (Gottfredson, 1996).
Race/Ethnicity
Race and ethnicity are factors that warrant consideration in the process of career development. One’s
racial and ethnic identification is the degree to which one identifies as a member of a certain racial or
ethnic group. From an individual perspective, the perception of the kinds of occupations viewed as
appropriate and available can be influenced by the type of learning experience and opportunities that
racial and ethnic minority members have been exposed to, as well as the availability of role models
from their racial or ethnic groups in different career areas (Tate et al., 2014). From a societal
perspective, racial and ethnic discrimination and oppression can lead to the formation of occupations
perceived as inaccessible to members of racial and ethnic minority groups (Bingham & Ward, 1994).
The impact of race and ethnicity on the career development of diverse individuals must therefore be
examined from both an individual and a societal point of view.
