The point of my essay is to persuade the audience that we must dismantle racial
discrimination in our society. Discrimination has become a persistent problem. No one should
endure racism, everyone has the right to fair treatment regardless of race, color, or ethnic origin.
My major is public administration and racial discrimination affects me and people like me
directly. In today’s times, we should not have to worry about discrimination everyone should
have the right to fair treatment. The Racial Discrimination Act of 1975 promotes equality for all.
The law should be obeyed by everyone. That is why I believe it is so important to start with early
education about racism.
Although there can be many key points addressed to end racism here are a few I’d like to
address, first, we should educate ourselves by having a better understanding of this problem. We
should talk to our children and the younger generation about racism. Second, we should be able
to identify our prejudice, by not prejudging, by listening to the words we speak and showing
respect for all. Because believe it or not children learn and mimic what adults do, they also
collect information from the world around them in order to actively construct their own beliefs
(Patterson & Bigler, 2006). Teaching them how to address and acknowledge racism starts in the
home. I think at some point in our life we may become exposed to this affliction of racism.
, Educating preschoolers on racial discrimination is vital to their education and shows a
benefit. With racism being an ongoing issue in our society it should be included in every school’s
curriculum. Not only should schools teach children as early as preschool, but parents should also
have a conversation about racism with their children as young as age three to five years old and
teachers should be required to include racial discrimination as a subject in their lesson plans.
“Teachers who intentionally plan curricula that affirm children’s racial identities have seen the
benefits this produces in supporting children’s growth and learning across many domains of
development” Ladson-Billings (2009) and Wright, Counsell, & Tate (2015). I feel this is
necessary because I believe sooner or later a person will either go through racism or meet
someone who is racist, so educating children at a young age should be required to make them
aware of the indifferences our society faces. Educating preschoolers about racial discrimination
in schools will not only make them aware, but it can also help educate them about how to
identify and recognize racism.
When children are educated about racial differences at an early age, they can learn how
injustice and inequality operate in our society. With the recent protest against racial injustice and
attention to the Black Live Matter movement, I’m sure many children have questions about what
is taking place in our world and should be taught about this movement. In an article titled "All
Schools Should Teach Students That Black Lives Matter” Journalist, Eisa Nefertari Ullen writes
“In the Old Town area of Alexandria, Virginia, the Jefferson-Houston School is distinguished as
the community's first Pre-K to 8th grade International Baccalaureate (IB) school, and is attended
by a diverse array of students. Jefferson-Houston is approximately 60 percent African American,
20 percent Latinx, 13 percent white, and 7 percent Asian and Mixed-Raceaccording to staff.
Jefferson-Houston educators say that Black Lives Matter at School awakened excitement and joy
in their students. For three Muslim first graders in particular, this joy was especially affirming.”
