ARTICLE SUMMARY

Original research is an important skill in developmental psychology. Understanding the sections

of a journal article can impact how the information provided in each section is received. In this

paper, this writer will discuss the purpose of each of the sections and what is presented in each

section of the two articles reviewed.

The two articles being reviewed are “Oral Microbiome Activity in Children With Autism

Spectrum Disorder” by Steve D. Hicks, Richard Uhlig, Parisa Afshari, Parisa Ashari, Jeremy

Williams, Maria Chroneos, Cheryl Tierney-Aves, Kayla Wagner, and Frank A. Middleton and

“Music improves social communication and auditory–motor connectivity in children with

autism” by Megha Sharda, Carola Tuerk, Rakhee Chowdhury, Kevin Jamey, Nicholas foster,

Melanie Custo-Blanch, Melissa Tan, Aparna Nadig, and Krista Hyde. Both articles focused on

the autism spectrum, its research and advancement, and varied impacts.

In the introduction, the reader learns the focus of the article being reviewed with some hint as to

why or what may have prompted the research to take place. For each of these articles, the

reason for the research is to gain more knowledge of the factors of autism, things that can be

used to determine autism, and music as a form of therapeutic aid for treating individuals with

autism. Hicks, et al. (2018) collaborated on their article to prove their hypothesis “GI

microbiome disruption in ASD extends to the oropharynx and suggests oral microbiome profiling

as a potential tool to evaluate ASD status”. In the introduction, the article discusses what the

, function of the GI microbiome and the differences between epitranscriptomic changes in the

saliva of an individual who is non-autistic and an autistic individual. It also presents its

hypothesis stating that this could be used to profile ASD. Sharda, et al. (2018) collaborated on

their article to prove their hypothesis “8–12 weeks of individual music intervention can indeed

improve social communication and functional brain connectivity, lending support to further

investigations of neurobiologically motivated models of music interventions in autism”. In the

introduction, the article discusses the basis of autism spectrum disorder and discusses the impact

of the disorder and the lack of effective interventions that impact behavior and psychosocial

areas. It also presents its hypothesis stating that music is effective in treating not only ASD

individuals, but all children and the positive interactions after a musical engagement. “Typically

developing children are more likely to play with another following a shared musical

experience23and joint musical interactions can enhance emotional empathy, prosociality and

bonding in children24–26” (Sharda, 2018).

In the method section, the reader is presented with the population being surveyed or involved in

the research and the process of the data collection and evaluation. This could be survey, variable

manipulation during an experiment, observation or a host of other approaches used to ethically

collect data. Hicks, et al. (2018) selected children ages 2 to 6 years old and used the method of

cross-sectional, observational, case control study. Background surveys were completed by

parents while the children were separated into 3 groups. Group 1 of children who were non-

autistic and met normal developmental milestones; Group 2 of children who presented with what

are considered developmental delays, but non-autistic; and Group 3 of children who were

determined to be autistic. The children were each provided a saliva test which gauged the levels

of epitranscriptomic bacteria. The data was then evaluated using the two-tailed t-test.

“Individual taxa differences among the three groups were investigated with nonparametric

Kruskal–Wallis testing, followed by posthoc between group comparisons (ASD:TD or ASD:DD)
