The world has been challenged by numerous healthcare problems in
the recent past. Nevertheless, although the outbreak of diseases such as
HIV/AIDS and Ebola has been witnessed in the past, the COVID-19 pandemic
has had a greater impact on the global economy than any other pandemic.
The outbreak of the pandemic led to the implementation of lock-downs in
various parts of the world. The COVID-19 virus can be transmitted through
direct and indirect contacts with infected people or surfaces (Huang &
Chen, 2020). The study examines the effectiveness of social distancing as
a tool to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic among the
African-American population in the Tristate area (NJ/ NY/ CT).
The Problem
One of the most critical impacts of social distancing is that it limits the
frequency and types of activities people engage in out of their homes. As a
result, this strategy limits the contact between people and the suspected
sources of transmission of the virus. Implementation of social distancing
also limits travel, especially through public means. According to De Vos
(2020),
, social distancing effectiveness is achieved through limited physical activity
and social isolation. As a result, people will get less exposure to the virus,
which is crucial in preventing the spread of the virus. Besides, some
countries and regions also suggested using cycling and walking as a strategy
to avoid getting into contact with each other. The rapid spread of the virus
within a short period was the main reason behind social distancing to curb
the spread (Qian & Jiang, 2020).
The rapid spread of the virus affected people's livelihoods, the medical
system, and social economies. Besides, the problem also requires
various stakeholders' collaborative efforts, especially towards creating
awareness of the spread through education.
The Setting/Context
The study focuses on the effectiveness of the social distancing
approach in curbing the spread of the COVID-19 virus among the African-
American population in the tri-state area of New Jersey, New York, and
Connecticut. In the US, the federal and state governments have realized the
importance of social distancing in reducing the virus's spread. Nevertheless,
certain vulnerable groups still require training on safety and security to
contain the spread. According to Aslam (2020), one of the most vulnerable
populations in contracting the virus is low-income earners. African-
Americans living in the area of study were faced with access to information
and quality healthcare from the onset of the outbreak. As a result, it took
the initiative of a collaborative team encompassing federal and state
government agents and medical professionals to offer education to the
community on the need to observe COVID-19 safety measures.
