CJS/215: Introduction to Forensics
Explaining Forensics
Forensic science goes back to many centuries. There have been individuals who have observed
evidence, and applied those basic scientific skills to solve crimes. The Swedish Chemist Carl
Wilhelm Scheele came up with the first test for detecting the poison arsenic in corpses. There
was also the German Chemist Valentin Ross who had discovered a better method to detecting
small amounts of arsenic in the walls of a victim’s stomach. Mathieu Orfila published the first
scientific treatise on the detection of poisons and their effects on animals. (Saferstein, Ph.D.)
Odontology assists criminal investigations when it involves a bite mark on the victim. It can help
detect the person who gave the marks. Toxicology can help investigations by determining if any
toxins or poisons were involved in the investigations. Forensic scientists examine and analyze
evidence from crime scenes to develop objective findings that can assist in an investigation and
prosecution. On the other hand, it may also exonerate an innocent person from suspicion.
