As the Director of Human Resources for a small rural care center. There have been some
issues regarding the high turnover of CNAs in all seven nursing wings. The issue is causing a
decrease in overall patient quality care, along with adversely affecting the labor budget due to
numerous call-offs from the CNAs. Some of the nurses that have stayed claims it is because
management is hiring the “bad ones.” In the paper it will address the issue, the questions that
would be answered from staff, and strategies to hire the more responsible CNA’s.
Addressing the Turnover
As the Director of Human Resources, it is important to find the reason as to why the
turnover rate has increase within the year. The first step that would be conducted is to ask the
CNA’s that had left as to why, what, or who made them leave. Next, is to ask the CNA’s that
remain what they think was the reason that caused the other CNA’s to leave. Most people within
the job that work with those who leave has a better understanding if the person that they have
worked with because they see them during their shift. I would then interview the managers and
review their hiring process up to the day that the employee has left. Based off the scenario, this is
a management problem. As a manager, it is important for the manager to review any applicant’s
resume before the interview. In the textbook, it states, “interviewers must always remember to
keep the interview focused on the job and on the applicant’s ability to perform it rather than on
personal attributes” (McConnell, p. 210, 2021). In the applicant’s resume, it allows the managers
to see the skills and assets that would be brought into the department. It is important that the
managers review applicant’s information so that they are no longer bringing “bad CNA’s” into
