Final Assignment
A crime scene investigation is an examination of a crime scene that seeks any clues or
evidence that may lead to a suspect or determination of events that took place at the scene. The
,2
investigation will produce evidence that will retell the story that led to the situation at the crime
scene. Crime scene investigation is a detailed process, the methodology requires precision and
care to reveal important clues, motive, and suspect of the crime. The roles and duties of law
enforcement officers, first responders, and crime scene investigators is a very important role to a
conducive analysis of a crime scene. Actions taken at the beginning of an investigation will play
a vital role in solving a case by determining the facts. The process entails taking careful and
concise steps throughout an investigation to preserve and capture evidence without tainting,
destroying it, and ensuring witnesses are not overlooked. Other vital components involved in a
crime scene analysis; Documentation of evidence, collection of evidence, processing evidence,
and ensuring all chain of custody is maintained. The proper steps will ensure that the facts
discovered are legally allowed to be entered into a trial. The following paper will take a scenario
and analyze each step of the investigation.
Approach to the Crime Scene
First responders are the first to arrive to a scene. First responders include law
enforcement, fire department, and emergency medical services. The responsibility of a first
responder is to secure the scene and preserve evidence from becoming destroyed, meaning crime
scene evidence should not be touched. In the event that evidence is tampered with or if fire or
medical had to disrupt the crime scene, this should be notated for the report and detectives. The
initial response is one of the most salient and essential pieces, any tampering with the evidence
can result in a false conclusion on the case. First responders are going to be responsible for
logging dispatch information, making observations about people or vehicles exiting the crime
scene, initial observations of the crime scene, and maintain composure. A first responder will
treat the area as a crime scene until otherwise determined. Logging dispatch information is
, 3
important, it is often the first report that a crime has occurred. The information gathered from a
dispatch log will include the date and time the call came in, the address, and caller information.
The information will help predict the scene that is being approached and the first responder’s
final report. First responders are then going to secure the perimeter and keep bystanders back
from the scene, separate witnesses and interview them separately when time. First responders
should not be discussing the scene with bystanders and witnesses.
According to the scenario provided, the Beach City California 911 dispatch received a
call at 7:15am from Mr. Frank Flora. Mr. Flora is the gardener for Mr. Mike Megabucks and
Mrs. Miranda Megabucks. When Mr. Flora entered the grounds at 1234 Beach Front road, he
located a body on the patio. Mr. Flora informed dispatch that he had checked for a pulse and
could not find one prior to calling 911. Officers Allen Able and Brenda Bates of the Beach City
Police Department were the first on scene to the address. Officers Able and Bates were let onto
the property by Mr. Flora who entered a security passcode required by the security gate. An
initial interview with Mr. Flora indicated that Mr. Megabucks and his wife were not home, they
travel often. Mr. Flora confirmed that a third resident from the home, Tom Threadbare was also
not home.
Preliminary findings concluded that there was a victim that was confirmed deceased, with
an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. Officer Able and Officer Bates did a search of the house
and ensured that there were not any imminent threats. Officers at this time should have called for
backup and began securing the perimeter to ensure that bystanders were kept back and
preserving the evidence from the weather elements. It was indicated that the round was wet, it
had rained for several hours prior to the officers arriving and this evidence has the potential of
being damaged or destroyed without proper preservation. Officers Able and Bates needed to
