Avoiding Biases and Insensitive Communications
As America grew as a nation and became the melting pot of cultures, the workforce had
to diversify itself as well. There are all types of cultures and ethnicities from all around the world
that has migrated to America and began working. With all the new people that joined the
workforce, companies needed to begin being conscious of how they spoke to their employees.
There are many tools employers can use to help their companies avoid being biased and
insensitive to other cultures and people. Many companies fail; many things go into account when
writing to employees. Companies tend to forget they need to try to stay positive and respectful
and that it is okay to use a little bit of humor when it is appropriate.
There are many tools a company can use to help avoid ineffective, biased, and insensitive
communication to their employees. One tool a company can incorporate into their
communication is using general neutral language. According to Laura Brown, (2019), “Today,
the masculine pronoun is no longer considered gender-neutral, which leaves professional writers
with some choices to make when they want to be inclusive.” An alternative a company can use to
avoid masculine pronouns is to begin using “they” and “their."
Another great tool a company can use is to change its gendered terminology. The
Houston Chronicle (Feigenbaum, 2017) stated, “Words that traditionally carry a gendered
connotation are easily overlooked landmines." Meaning people are so used to the words they
may not realize that it could offend some people. The Houston Chronicle (Feigenbaum, 2017)
further explains, “Business are replacing the traditional title of a salesman with salesperson, sales
representative, or sales associate.” By moving to a more neutral tone, a company will sound
more inclusive and sensitive to all genders.
