Integrins are highly conserved adhesion molecules found on the surfaces of cells in all multicellular eukaryotes. They are heterodimers composed of components, single-pass type I membrane-spanning proteins that are not covalently connected. Adhesion strength is essential for embryonic maturation, tissue preservation and regeneration, host immunity, and hemostasis.
