Prominent Leader: Transformational or Transactional?

Do most leaders believe they are transformational or transactional? This is a question that

every leader needs to ask themselves when taking a position as a leader. This can be a foundation

that any leader can build upon and help be a successful pioneer. Transactional leaders are more

detailed oriented and like to plan and schedule when things will happen, while leaders with

transformational leadership "seek change and engage followers and the organization by creating

a compelling vision, strategy, and culture" (Weiss, 2015). When we think of transformational

leaders, we think of Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Steve Jobs, and Jeff Bezos, to name a few.

Still, one of the more well-known transformational leaders is Martin Luther King Jr. King was

known for his non-violent protest in the 1960s to help African Americans overcome the social

injustice happening in America. During this time, MLK displayed a genuinely transformational

leader's characteristics by inspiring, influencing, encouraging ideas, and individualized

consideration to serve his purpose and people.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Between 1950 and 1970, America was at a crossroads with social injustice and legal

segregation between African Americans and Caucasian Americans, and equal rights. During this

time, one individual stood above the rest and fought for what he believed. Martin Luther King

Jr. found himself in the middle of fighting for the rights of his race and beliefs. He displayed his

transformational leadership by inspiring his fellow people to see the inequality in how they were

treated during this time. In the below, I will discuss how King showed the features of a

transformational leader, starting with how he inspired others to fight for what they believed in,

followed by his influence and ideas leading to the change of equality in the culture and the

enactment of the law known as the Civil Rights Act.
